10 MW Darstadt/Stalldorf storage project to be integrated into the energy system through market-based optimisation
MaxSolar and BKW have entered into a tolling agreement for the Darstadt/Stalldorf battery storage project. The agreement marks the first collaboration between the two companies in the field of battery storage marketing and lays the foundation for the flexible deployment of storage capacity in the electricity market. The battery energy storage system, with a power output of 10 MW and a capacity of 40 MWh, is expected to commence operations in the first quarter of 2027.
With this project, MaxSolar is pursuing a marketing model that specifically integrates battery storage systems into the electricity market, positioning the company among the early market participants. Under the tolling model, BKW will be responsible for market optimisation and the commercialisation of the storage system’s flexibility. This enables storage capacity to respond to fluctuations in the electricity market and provide additional flexibility to the energy system.
“Battery storage systems are becoming a key component of an increasingly flexible energy infrastructure. With the Darstadt/Stalldorf project, we are demonstrating how proprietary storage projects can be economically integrated into the market through appropriate marketing models. By entering into this tolling agreement, we aim to further accelerate the diversification of our marketing models as a next-generation IPP—in this case for our standalone battery storage assets,” says Christoph Strasser, Managing Director of MaxSolar.
The battery storage system will be connected at the substation through which the Darstadt solar park already feeds electricity into the grid. Both facilities will therefore use the same grid connection point, while being operated independently of one another from both a technical and economic perspective. As a grid-connected battery storage system, the facility can respond flexibly to market requirements independently of the photovoltaic plant’s electricity generation and make its storage capacity available according to prevailing market conditions.
The expansion of battery storage is becoming increasingly important in light of growing requirements for flexibility and system stability in the electricity market. Storage systems can help better align generation and consumption, reduce grid congestion and integrate renewable energy more efficiently into the energy system.
