MaxSolar and DB Energie sign first hybrid PPA for an unsubsidized combination of renewable energy plants

Long-term power purchase agreement combines photovoltaics and battery storage in a joint marketing model

The expansion of renewable energy is changing the requirements of the electricity market. As the share of solar and wind power increases, flexible marketing concepts are becoming increasingly important. Against this backdrop, MaxSolar and DB Energie have signed the first hybrid PPA for the Friedrichshof project in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, combining photovoltaics with so-called green electricity storage. The project is the first in Germany to market an unsubsidized combination of renewable energy assets. While long-term power purchase agreements for individual generation facilities have become an established component of the energy market, the marketing of integrated photovoltaic and battery storage combinations is still in its early stages. Hybrid PPAs combine renewable electricity generation with the flexibility of battery storage. This makes it possible to supply and market electricity in a more demand-oriented manner over time. This is becoming an increasingly important building block for the market integration of renewable energy and the expansion of unsubsidized projects. The Friedrichshof project demonstrates how this approach can be implemented in practice. The ground-mounted photovoltaic plant in the municipality of Klein Belitz, in the Rostock district, has a capacity of approximately 37 megawatt peak (MWp) and is expected to generate around 36,680 megawatt hours of electricity annually. It is complemented by a co-located battery storage system with an output of 15 megawatts and a storage capacity of 30 megawatt hours. The photovoltaic and battery facilities are scheduled to be commissioned in summer 2027. Under the ten-year agreement, MaxSolar will supply the electricity generated, including guarantees of origin, to DB Energie. The supply will be provided as a “Pay-as-Nominated” balancing group delivery, based on the forecast electricity generation for the following day. The battery storage system makes it possible to shift forecast feed-in volumes over time, thereby flexibly adapting the delivery profile to the requirements of the electricity market.

For MaxSolar, the project is also part of a long-term corporate strategy. The company aims to consistently develop and market future photovoltaic projects as integrated combinations of renewable electricity generation and battery storage. As renewable energy becomes increasingly integrated into the market, such concepts are gaining importance because they combine flexibility, economic viability and security of supply. The Friedrichshof project underscores this development and demonstrates how new marketing models can support the further expansion of renewable energy.
