Groundbreaking ceremony for solar park in Darstadt

Yesterday, Monday, October 21, 2024, the ground-breaking ceremony for the solar park in Darstadt - a district of Ochsenfurt - took place, which will secure a sustainable energy future for the region with a total output of around 70 megawatts.

The event was opened by a representative of the management of MaxSolar GmbH, the company responsible for the development, construction and operation of the solar plant. Elke Hanel warmly welcomed the numerous invited guests from the surrounding communities, the Ochsenfurt town council, the landowners and the representatives of the nature conservation authorities involved. Ms. Karen Heußner, Deputy District Administrator of the Würzburg district, and Mr. Peter Juks, Mayor of Ochsenfurt, gave welcoming speeches and emphasized the importance of the project for the town and the region.

Karen Heußner explained in her speech: “This plant is a good step forward in the energy transition. Ground-mounted photovoltaics does not mean land sealing: the ground remains open, can absorb water and valuable habitats for both plants and animals are created under and between the modules.” Elke Hanel from MaxSolar confirmed that nature compatibility is a high priority in project planning and implementation. This is also reflected in the concept developed together with the nature conservation authorities.

Ecological measures and community involvement

The solar park extends over two areas: The North Solar Park with around 50 hectares and the South Solar Park with around 20 hectares of photovoltaic area. The ecological measures create ideal living conditions for insects, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and birds. Another advantage of the project is the improvement of the groundwater situation. By dispensing with fertilizers and pesticides, the nitrate pollution of the groundwater is significantly reduced. In addition, a comprehensive expert opinion was drawn up in advance of the project to enable the resettlement of the endangered field hamster. Extensive measures to protect the local hamster population were then initiated on almost 30 hectares.

Over an expected period of five months, around 115,000 photovoltaic modules will be installed, which will not only strengthen the regional energy supply, but also significantly reduce CO2 emissions by 53,500 tons. The system will supply around 22,500 households with clean solar energy.

Another special feature of the project is that citizens of the region will be able to participate in the project itself. Information events with further details will be held at the beginning of 2025.
