Exactly 126,672 high-performance bifacial modules will in future generate clean electricity on a site north-east of the municipality of Amerdingen, surrounding the Sternbach estate. With an installed capacity of around 76 megawatts peak across approximately 51 hectares, the solar park ranks among the most powerful projects in the region.
On 18 June, the solar park in the Donau-Ries district was officially commissioned. MaxSolar implemented the project as the construction and long-term operating partner. It was initiated and developed by Camilla, Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, on her own land, and is operated in partnership with MaxSolar.
Numerous guests attended the inauguration, including Christoph Schmid (SPD), Member of the Bundestag; Dr Reinhard Brandl, Parliamentary Secretary of the CSU in the German Bundestag; Michael Dinkelmeier (District Administrator of the Donau-Ries district); Xaver Berchtenbreiter (Mayor of Amerdingen), Harald Wiedenmann (Deputy Mayor), Stephan Herreiner (Mayor of Bissingen) and David Wittner (Lord Mayor of Nördlingen). Also present were Dr Stephan Rauh, a board member of the Bavarian Renewable Energy Association (LEE Bayern); Bernd Kerscher (Bavarian Solar Association); Fred Oechsle from the relevant grid operator, NetzeBW; and other representatives from local politics, associations and participating companies. Representatives gathered at the site to celebrate the joint success of the project.
From an idea to a major project
Development of the solar park began in early 2022. Unlike many similar projects, Princess Wittgenstein made a conscious decision not to simply lease out the land. Instead, she initiated the project herself and took responsibility for its development.
“We didn’t want to simply hand this project over to someone else,” said Princess Wittgenstein at the opening. “We live here, we run our business here, and we feel a close connection to this community. From the very beginning, our aim was to keep as much added value as possible within the region.”
The municipality of Amerdingen supported the project from the outset. Mayor Berchtenbreiter, the local council and the municipal administration provided constructive support throughout the development process and created the conditions for its targeted implementation.
MaxSolar participated in the project as a partner and took charge of the construction of the solar park. “It was crucial for us to find a partner who shares our values, thinks long-term and understands the special significance of this project for the local area. In MaxSolar, we have found exactly that partner,” emphasised Princess Wittgenstein.
The project is based entirely on a market-oriented business model: around 70 per cent of the electricity generated is sold via long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), with the remainder sold directly. A conscious decision has been made not to seek subsidies under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). Electricity generation is therefore independent of state support.
The Amerdingen solar park is thus a prime example of a new generation of economically viable renewable energy projects that manage without state subsidies whilst contributing to price stability and security of supply. Furthermore, the project boosts regional value creation through the financial participation of the municipality of Amerdingen.
The solar park also sets a clear example from an environmental perspective, as it is estimated to supply around 23,500 households with renewable electricity and prevent around 29,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. In addition to sowing native seed, near-natural forest edges have been developed, multi-row hedgerows have been planted and external compensation areas have been created to protect ground-nesting bird species.

Projects such as this make a tangible contribution to this whilst also strengthening the region.”
From Mayor Berchtenbreiter’s perspective, the solar park is “not only an investment in modern energy generation, but also an investment in the future of the municipality. It demonstrates that our municipality is prepared to take responsibility for the next generation and to play an active role in sustainable energy generation.”
